The Holmlid effect can be described as an enhancement mechanism for proton decay… which is a hypothetical form of radioactive decay in which the proton decays into subatomic particles, mainly pions. There is currently no experimental evidence for it, indicating that protons will not decay on their own, but this does not mean they cannot be forced to decay by another outside mechanism, such as Holmlid has found.
