The article on Carbon Engineering I posted in thread called Carbon Capture and Renewable Fuels makes it clear that they are not hiding the fact that they need an outside energy source. The technology is intended to extract CO2 from the atmosphere and make automotive fuel. It is not intended to serve as a primary energy source such as oil or natural gas or solar. Here is another example of similar work being done by the car company Audi on synthetic fuels. They call it e-fuel:
