Regarding: "Fusion-free" would imply that the thermal effect seen is some kind of resonant nuclear disintegration or "quark soup" reaction which does not require the actual fusion of two nuclei.
This description is exactly the case. Experiments have shown that the LENR active agent: presumably a "cluster" of excited ultra dense deuterium atoms are seen to tunnel through a solid lattice of atoms and creates a cavity (tunnel) while the cluster somehow holds these lattice atoms in suspension and carries these atoms along with it as it bores a hole through the lattice. The tunnels are hexagonal in cross section. When this active agent becomes inactive, it releases these atoms that the active agent has been holding in suspension while it was active but in a new atomic configuration. In one experiment, atoms of carbon were transmuted and deposited in a sphere of transmuted elements including either calcium, aluminum, or silicon immediately after the active agent went passive after a period of activation were tunneling through diamond had occurred. Such tunneling and periodic depositing of transmutation by products were also seen to occur in quartz.
