Vortexians; I've decided to research the oilgae matter.
Someone posted that yields of 5 - 10,000 gallons of oil per acre were possible. This beats growing corn, or any other crop for that matter. Apparently the people who organized the three companies mentioned in the oilgae news blog http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-6163910-7.html , heard the same thing. One of the posters on the blog criticized the goals expressed in their business plans as unrealistic. I noticed that Biserkley and Sandia Laboratories did the research that they companies are using, I'm going to see if I can find their publications and read them.
My first move was to call the U of MN's Ag Engineering college. They gave me Roger's number. Roger is either doing, or planning to do oilgae research. Our discussions have not preceded too far yet, but his first comment was, "you will need a strain of algae that produces lots of oil." Silly me, I assumed that you would just contact the American True Type Culture Collection and order a few. I soon realized that this research project was not as far along as I had thought. Later I read that one of the companies started out with several thousand strains of algae, and they are now down to just a few.
Earlier someone posted the website of a Dutch company that is doing oilgae research. I emailed them but didn't receive a reply, if one of you has the URL, or any other information that you think I should read, please post them.
