Thanks for the links. I quickly scanned the pages but the systems
shown do
not appear to depend on gravity in any essential way.

Nothing you have shown depends on gravity in any way. If built
symmetrically as shown, i.e. well balanced, it will no more have a
preferential position than a propellor or fan (that is to say no
preference at all).
