Chris Tinsley and I fooled around with SMOTs for a couple of weeks. I can confirm that the results are random -- all over the map -- unless you have a very careful launching method. Putting the ball on the track manually and letting it go, as shown in this video, is not adequate. Even with a mechanical launching system you have to be careful not to impart spin or anything like that.
