Apparently they call it "MEXT" Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology. Isn't that ridiculous?! No wonder they can't do anything about cold fusion: they are busy counting how many pushups kids can do.
Seriously, this week on NHK there was a long report describing the decline of PE among children, with an impressive array of statistics & graphs showing how far the average 12-year-old girl can throws softballs today versus 1987. These people may be sidelined by trivial assignments when they should be developing cold fusion, but they are sure are thorough!
