There are some excellent niche markets for small wind turbines, such as deep water buoys and other platforms at sea. The are similar to solar cell installations used along isolated highways for emergency telephones, and for fog monitoring stations on mountain roads.

People developing expensive new technology should start in a niche market in which customers are happy to a premium. Solar cells took of in the 1980s and were greatly reduced in price when they were widely used for hand calculators.
