Indeed, methinks that's a logical assumption. I was looking at the
same Wiki link.

Nevertheless, the alnico magnets are slowly demagnetizing. My
suspicion is that the magnetic interactions with the aluminum disk is
the primary reason for the slowly degenerating strength of the alnico
magnets.

An obvious way to test this hypothesis would be to replace the
aluminum disk with a non-magnetic material, like Derlin. My bet is
that a Derlin disk variation would result the following observations.

1) The disk will no longer rotate.
2) The alnico magnets will no longer demagnetize.

...what they might say in the trade as a "trade off" of benefits. ;-)

Do you think your group might be able to test this hypothesis?
