1.2kVDC and 4kV, eh? No problem.

Did find: old microwave oven. Transformer still works, lower wattage oven so 
"safer" output. 120VAC to 2kVAC transformer. Plan to send this to a 2 stage 
multiplier, as I have about a hundred 6kV diodes on hand and nice capacitors 
rated for this voltage range as well. .01uF, lots of them. This will charge a 
bank of capacitors, so as to smooth the ripple. A resistive divider will then 
allow extraction of some 'keep alive' voltage of around 1kV or so, while the 
top will reach approx. 5.6kV.

I'll make the multiplier negative HV out, so the plasma may be floated at 
-5.6kV. The power input to the transformer will be from an inverter, supplied 
by a car battery. This thing will be done well away from electronics equipment.

What I expect will happen: most likely, nothing unconventional. Nevertheless, 
it's worth trying, as it is simple, and I need this supply for other work I am 
going to be doing.
