Toyota announced they will begin sales of a compact hybrid car in 2011. It is based on the model they call the "Yaris" in the U.S. It will cost about $15,000 in Japan, which is cheap, for there.
The Japanese article on this says the car will get 40 kilometers per liter of fuel, which is 94 MPG.
