FDR's interventions failed too, for years thereafter as the Depression went on
and on until WW2 or the trade that it triggered ended it.  And Obama reviving
the economy?  Appear is the correct word as trillions are borrowed, printed and
spent that will never be repaid.  Our grandchildren would be interested in how
we're spending their money.

Engineers tend to believe that all problems have a technical solution.

That would be because they are nearly correct.  It is simply astounding to me
to observe the Healthcare debate with almost no comment that the solution is
technical. Or energy. Or terrorism Or the economy.

Running a campaign is the essence of politics, which is the essence of
governance.

uh, no - effective governance is quite different from campaigning which
explains why JFK and Hillary Clinton were such excellent campaigners and so
ineffective in office.  FDR, LBJ and Reagan were competent in governance.  On
governance, Obama is in trouble with lower ratings than Bush at the same point
in his term.

As for China, I conclude that Lee Kwan Yew has a point in saying that you can
only have as much human rights as your developed economy can support.

I have often heard this. It makes no sense to me at all. In 1776 the U.S.
economy was far weaker and smaller than any third world nation's is today. The
U.S. was a colony with no industry and few schools or universities.

Yep, and the ideals of the American Revolution were pleasant dreams amidst
slavery, inequality for women,  Irish Need not apply,  and Indians who weren't
even people.  A great time to be rich and white while possessing land, homes
and other resources most third world types still don't have..  Develop general
wealth and things change.
