The trade-off is probably in the number of batteries, which is why the Toyota is cheaper. The latest info I can find on the Volt is that it will be "in the mid to upper 30s range before a $7500 tax credit." So the Toyota will be cheaper, and I will bet they make a profit on every car, whereas GM will lose money with every sale.
The list price of 3 million yen equals $33,400 today, but the exchange rate is high, 90 yen to the dollar. Most people in Japan hope that it falls. That does not mean it will. Heck, I can remember when it was 360 yen to the dollar.
