Peter Graneau had a short paper where he discharged a large energy-storage capacitor into a stack of carbon resistor pucks. The measured energy (integrated scope V-I waveforms) was quite a bit larger than the 0.5*C*V^2 value. I don't recall if he went further in doing precise in/out accounting.

So maybe you can heat your home by cap discharge? Perhaps the spark gap working gas is important?
