I envision them in a tight array, close to one another, each radiating a lot of heat, like an automobile engine. You cannot reach into a thing like that and remove a component, even if that component is cool. I think you would have to wait for the regular 6-months maintenance time to swap out the dead cells. You would also swap out all of the ones that were used, leaving only reserve cells that were not used during the 6-month period, or a few reserve cells that were used for only a few weeks.
They would be especially hot in an electric generator. A water heater or space heater would be cooler.
