Dozens are trying to do it. They have had some success but they are still 1 or 2 orders of magnitude away from Rossi as far as I know. Why do you say "pompously"? It is a catalyst. Maybe a nuclear catalyst, but a catalyst is a catalyst. It promotes the reaction without taking part in it, and without being used up. Presumably. Unless the Ni transmutes, which would make it an ingredient I suppose. With Pd reactions, my guess is that the metal acts as a nuclear catalyst most of the time but occasionally the metal itself is transmuted. - Jed
