The reason nuclear reactions provide such a high energy density is that the
high energy is produced from a single reaction involving only a few
reactants and reaction products. It is the mechanism of spreading the
energy out from a few highly energetic particles or photons to a larger
population that is the problem. I didn't read those papers, but from the
abstracts, isn't SPUC/SPDC all about atomic transitions; i.e. low energy
released per reaction?
