This is like an experiment. All the data shows the expected result. Then you get a set of data that calls all the other data into question.

Do you then:

1) Throw it out, claiming it is just noise?

2) Say WTF and investigate?

I'm a #2 kind of guy. But then just maybe that is why I'm an engineer and not a scientists?

I like noise as that is where all the interesting stuff lives.
