If Storm's theory is correct, it is the cracks resulting from the stresses which made the beads produce excess heat. If Patterson found a way to prevent the stressing due to the difference in coefficient of expansion, he might have solved the flaking problem; but, at the same time, he killed the process in preventing the surface cracking. Now wouldn't that be a hoot!
