Good point. I will blame this on Richard :) 

Actually - he was an expert in ozone and I had never heard of O6 when it
first came up ... so maybe he was of the opinion that to form the molecule,
the best way would be via ions.

... or maybe it should be blamed on the Dime Box, where the patrons are in
the ozone on a regular basis.

Ozone itself is not an ion. Just a molecule with three atoms of Oxygen. Why
do you believe that O6 would be ionic?
