This is a comet, from waaaay out in the ort cloud.... If we are targeted by a comet like this we will have less than 24 mo warning. We can't find everything out that far that could hit us, we can find all of the asteroids, but not the all comets.. They come from too far away....
We don't need to just search, we need a redundant robust response sitting on the pad ready to go on 4 weeks notice.... A retograde impact with a 50Km object would be billions of megatons equivalent energy... energy is 1/2mv^2 Retrograde is 2X V and the mass is proportional to the volume squared.... So if a 2Km rock caused the dinosaur die off this would be (50km/2km)^3* (2*V)^2 or 62500 times MORE powerful than what killed the dinosaurs.
