The metastable state of the fused nucleus may have such a long lifetime in solid state structures that it can decay in other ways than by re-emission of the incident proton or by emission of gamma-ray photons, and energy is released over relatively long time also as lower energy photons (e.g. X-ray photons) or as phonons (lattice vibrations) to the surrounding solid lattice."
