I don't think that Jim could recreate them either. But I now think that the layering of Cu then Ni and Pd , or Au and Pd was part of the "secret". Au lowers the energy of vacancy of formation for the Pd as does Pd on Ni. I believe the vacancies are part of the required pathway, if not the active site itself. Also, the external heater was applying a B field in the better system.
