I do not know how they were loaded. Maybe just by exposure to hydrogen gas?
So maybe it wasn't an electrode.

I saw a photo of one once. From that I estimate it was few ounces. It was
covered up with a hood to prevent ignition. It looked a little like
lipstick. I would not want to carry one on my pocket.

I would not want to carry a 19th century wooden match in my pocket either.
They were the "strike anywhere" type. They sometimes rubbed against
one-another and ignited.
