The dip coincident with the Northern Lights may lend credence to my suggestion voiced here previously that the energy source could be the Van Allen belts. These are connected through the Earth's magnetic field with magnets on the ground. When the lights brighten, they are dumping energy into the atmosphere by ionizing the air molecules.
