Keep in mind that they are using wave interference patterns generated by the 
addition of many reflected waves to generate the movement.  This is a very 
complicated wave function to work with and likely requires an excellent 
understanding of the entire system structure contributing to the experiment to 
achieve the desired results.

I suspect that is would be possible to excite the system with various signals 
in order to build up a model that you then can control.  Hopefully, the tank 
does not require tightly regulated resonances in order to function in a 
controllable fashion.
