Yes, that thought had also occurred to me, however it doesn't explain the need for Hydrogen. But there is another possibility...if a shrunken electron can "jump ship" from Hydrino to Lithium, and this happens 3 times, then you end up with a small neutral Li atom which could also approach a Ni nucleus close enough to allow neutron hopping.
