Telneting into your school account will expose your school password to
people sniffing packets, but won't tell them anything useful about your
own computer.  The only danger is if you use exactly the same
username/password combo on your home machine as you do at school.  Someone
who figures out how to break into your school account may check to see if
they can break into your home computer with the same information.  Also
note that standard implementations of things like POP and IMAP also send
your password in plain text, so telnet may not be your only worry in this
case...
