[vox-tech] xmms problem: sounds like gurgling brook

I just installed xmms after not using it for a while and now I find that
everything I try to play sounds like a gurgling brook. Obviously there is
something going wrong here :-). Previously xmms worked just fine on my same
machine. Any ideas?
