Henry:
        I've got two ideas:
        1) Is the right output plugin (OSS vs ESound vs ALSA) selected?
        2) Is the dmasound module installed (I'm assuming this is on a
PPC)?

I get the same behavior on my Vaio F250 laptop when I don't install the
neoMagic sound module before I run X.  Something about the X driver
writing to the location in mem that the sound driver expects DMA
at...  *shrug*.
