Hi Sep! I was the guy who compiled Linux 2.4 for your machine at the
InstallFest while Rusty responded to problems at work.
At the IF, we were discussing whether you had a static IP or a dynamic IP,
and I said that as far as I was aware, PacBell only gives out static IP
numbers in small "networks", typically for businesses. If you do have
dynamic IP, it is almost certainly PPPoE.
In a nutshell, you need to make sure your network card driver is loaded
(lsmod will tell you what drivers are installed, insmod or modprobe will
let you get it in there), and run "adsl-setup" and then "adsl-start".
These last two programs come with the Roaring Penguin PPP-over-Ethernet
package. Mark Kim (on vox-tech) uses RP-PPPoE on a Mandrake system.

I don't know if Peter Salzman (who also helped you at the IF) went through
your network services... I was too distracted to get to it. This should
happen as soon as possible... preferably before you make the network
connection.

An even better overview:

If this is too much, ask for a LERT call...
I also recall that you did not have the latest modutils installed... I
think that once you get on the net, you can upgrade that .deb package with
apt-get... This will let modprobe work, so that the normal network
startup scripts will work again.
