Thanks for the reply. Since the last posting, I upgraded to 4.1.0. Now, X won't even come up. I have the correct values for my terminal. It looks like the system thinks there is only 256K on the card, and it can't find a mode, even not enough ram for 320x200, so it fails. It could be a bios problem, this is a custom system, built for a specific project, and an early version of the bios. I started to think that I could by a new cpu board and have something that works for all the hours I'm putting in.
