Mplayer is usually pretty verbose about not finding codecs etc.. Did it say anything useful ? Try -v if not. I can't remember having permanently stumped mplayer yet. I got a bit too aggressive with the 'd' key so I can't remember if it was you or Pete that wanted to play this file.
