I believe someday has come... it's not totally open-source, but by following the instructions here:

I was able to play the very movie you speak of... with sound! It still has that funny border thing going on, and the sound only comes out of one channel, but it works.

Mplayer (at least the copy I have) didn't do well with this one.
Video, but no sound.  (Also, video apparently was supposed to be
stretched, but wasn't, so there was a black border around right & bottom)

everything points to wine. not that i have a problem with that. i was
just hoping for better.
