Have you installed VMware tools? It's important to get Linux into
GUI mode correctly.
My linux is Slackware 7.0/7.1/8.0, it runs perfectly under Vmware,
of course, in GUI mode. However I guess it's not the problem of
distribution. You may give more details about the problem you met.
