The new experiential kernel you built below (3.01) does a nice job at
loading the serial_cs module for the particular PCMCIA modem I am testing:

cardmgr[1777]: socket 0: Sierra Wireless AC850 3G Network Adapter R1
I still have a few issues to work out on my own, including what follows:
cardmgr[1777]: executing: 'modprobe serial_cs'
serial_cs: serial8250_register_port() at 0x03e8, irq 11 failed
cardmgr[1777]: get dev info on socket 0 failed: No such device
But my real question about the new experimental kernel is, that my ath0
support seems to have gone away (aetheros madwifi, which worked very
well in the stock voyage 2.0 kernel I used before). I now get something
like this on an ifup ath0:
ifup ath0
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/madwifi exited with return code 1
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device ath0 ; No such device.
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
ath0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
ath0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
ath0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
Failed to bring up ath0.
Do I need to change out some madwifi tools to make it happen with this
kernel?

not voyage and is not ready to use.

I also noticed that pcmcia-cs was depreciated before 0.2 is
released. For newer 2.6 kernel, a new pcmcia util is needed. I
think I would need to move to Debian testing (etch) to minimize work
on backporting the packages. This will automatically add udev
support as well.

the issue was serial_cs, but there are some other items regarding

Recommended voyage to a friend who wants to run his pcmcia modem on
it.
It needs the serial_cs module, which didn't seem to be in the voyage
kernel. I have made him a kernel package with it in, and waiting to
hear back from him that it works. I just thought you might like to
know
that this option is useful to some people. The kernel config
setting is:
SERIAL_8250_CS
I set it to m for module.
