Hi Nick,
don't think the initial install should make a difference.
any chance your connection attempts are on something other than port 22?
How about trying an outbound ssh from the ALIX via your serial
connection, and check that you can ping your desktop from the ALIX.
Aloha,

Aloha Nick,
I can't think of anything special to do; from the serial login, you
might
ifconfig eth0
to make sure it's really 192.168.1.12 <http://192.168.1.12>, and
netstat -na
to see that sshd is listening on port 22.
Good luck.

According to dmesg eth0 comes up fine. The machines gets a fixed IP from
my monowall firewall, set to 192.168.1.12 <http://192.168.1.12>; also
tried it with a random dhcp ip from monowall. sshd_config does have its
listen port on 22. When I was pinging the ALIX it was the only other
machine on in my very small network, and I could see the ethernet port
lights blink in response to the pings. My desktop does listen to a
different SSH port.
I did do the initial install for serial login instead of console login.
Would that make a difference?
I'm stumped...
