Rickx,Posting the contents on dmesg after a boot may shed some light on it. It may be your USB drive isn't fully initialised before the mount init scripts run. Compiling ohci_hcd, ehci_hcd, usbcore and usb_storage into the kernel, rather than loading them as modules would probably be the cleanest solution.
