mmh, it seems the critical part was the semicolon.
I took the sintax from the html 4 manual at
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/global.html
that puts the example
<META http-equiv="Expires" content="Tue, 20 Aug 1996 14:25:27 GMT">
so it seems there would be a little change in sintax in 4.0 8-/
