You could call it a "vote of confidence". Anyway, if I want to buy a
new car, I think General Motors (or whoever I would want to buy from)
would LOL, if I would come up there and say "hey, I heard the next
model is in a prototype stage, I know it's still very unfinished, but
since I already own an older model, I would like to have such a
prototype, so that I can start using it before you are finished".

Such is life. If you want to buy a product, in most cases you have to
wait until it is finished. Sure, software in beta versions is
different, but a lot of programmers have a choice of beta-testers they
rely on. Using a beta version means you would not only use it, but you
would have to test it as well (which is more than just seeing if you
can load your favorite URL). That is why the beta testing stage is
called a testing stage, it is not because the users could test if they
like the software, but because the author would get a lot of input on
how his program fails with other programs, on how button x doesn't do
option y on system z, etc. Beta-testing is hardly ever used to give
out pre-releases to existing users. Sure, YAM is a different case, but
with YAM even the final version will be freeware, so why not release
the beta-versions as well? With Voyager version 3 might very will turn
out to be an update I would have to pay for (and I would pay for
it:-)), but if I would have the last beta version of it because I am
registered for version 2.95, who says I would pay for the first
official release (which would be largely the same as the last beta?).
I could just as well continue to use the beta-version, thus avoiding
the cost of upgrading, thus ripping Olli off. I'm sure none of the
people on this list would act like that, but believe me, there are
people who would do such a thing.
