Hi,
I thought I would put this out there, to you.
I use both paid ISP's and free ISP's (actually one free ISP
and two paid ones). I have, gradually started noticing a bigger
and bigger difference in service, between the free and the paid.
Before I continue, let us make sure we understand that it is
not that the free ISP is someone who is running it from his
computer in his bedroom, in his parent's house, and is doing
this as a hobby, in much the same manner that many had run BBS's.
Here we have an ISP which offers various services, for fees.
These include everything from DSL service, to Web site hosting,
etc. It is the membership and use via a computer modem, over
standard common carrier, that is free. All a subscriber pays is
the cost of the local telephone call; and, that is paid to the
telephone company. (BTW, MetConnect.com does not have any ad-
vertising banners or blurbs to interfere with your use of their
service as an ISP.
I started noticing that there was an unreasonable slowdown in
all transfers and surfing. In fact, considering that you *must*
use Web mail to send and receive messages, so there is not that
*long, long* wait until all the messages are downloaded into my
computer, the transfer of files should not be so slow. Mind-
Spring (now, EarthLink) and AmigaOnLine were, both two to, maybe
five times faster.
I do not know why this is happening. Have any of you had any
similar experiences? If so, what did you do?
Like I said, at the beginning, this is OT, but, I think it is
valid enough for all of us to find out the answer. Then, I
believe the whole thing can be dropped.
'til next time.
Julian.
