I don't believe it is possible to use the redhat kernel sources (7.3 or 9.0) to apply the vserver patch set. You are better off going with a vanilla kernel (or the ck1 patchset to a vanilla kernel, which has a lot of the same kernel features that RedHat includes in their kernel O(1), xfs, etc... And there is a vserver patch set for this kernel.). As for the distro question: you really need to consider how dependant you are on updates to the distro. There are several services cropping up that will continue to support RedHat versions that RedHat has decided to neglect (Progeny). I also think that freshrpms.net will also be offering something, but I need to read up on that again. (apt-get for rpm are all available, mmm... apt-get) And as a word of caution... The Fedora Kernel is a mess... At least in SMP mode when using SMB or NFS. I had a server tank on me this weekend while trying to create an NFS mount... I am in the process of rolling my own SMP kernel now (non-vserver).
