Sorry, let me clarify my response - you need a 'vanilla' kernel from
kernel.org, but you can run RH9 apps, use rpm, etc.  I guess I think of my
root servers as still being RH9, even though they're running
2.4.24-vs1.26.  Everything is RedHat except the kernel. :)

So install RH9 normally, then manually compile and install a new kernel 
from kernel.org with the vs patches.
