Ok... had a look at what else happens to gVersion and it doesn't cause a
problem, as information about any paths that would be requested for that
file will be overwritten when the checkin occurs on the branch.
To semi-answer my own question, there does not appear to be a concern
about output correctness... but may be some concern about temporarily
incorrect information in some of its book-keeping data structures in
case this ever gets used for anything else. (and note that the apparent
concern was about *normal* branched files rather than the exceptional
case of a branched file pinned or rebranched before the branch point).
