Has anyone tried to run vtun through a socks proxy?

I am a heavy user with many sites. Sometimes I run into firewall issues
where only port 80 is open. To remedy this I use iptables to redirect
port 80 to port 5000 on the server. Since the server runs apache I
have to burn up another public ip address and assign it to eth0:1. I've
used software that ran real-time protocols using port 80 to the same
server that served up web pages. My thought was that possibly those
folks modified Apache. Now I'm thinking possibly SOCKS. I even thought
about writing an Apache module to allow me real-time communications.

Possibly modify vtun to open a connection to port 80. Send '
GET /proxy/5000' and then mod_X will then do the work.

I've used Apache for years, but am clueless as to its internals.

How do you guys deal with firewall issues? Both the server and the
client are on privates behind firewalls so I exclusively use the ppp
method.
