Okay, it's February, so that must mean it's time to release VC4 (Glendale) Alpha 2.
The development team has been busy, busy, busy over the last month, adding new functionality, fixing bugs, and incorporating your feedback and comments. We're pleased to deliver the fruits of that work today with VC4 (Glendale) Alpha 2. HOW TO GET IT: ============== VC4 (Glendale) Alpha 2 is available for immediate download either at the new Vyatta.org site (see the separate Vyatta.org announcement), or from the download page on Vyatta.com. Given that the mailing lists and the wiki are going to go away here in a short period of time, I'd recommend going over to Vyatta.org and creating yourself a new account, and then downloading VC4 (Glendale) Alpha 2 from there. Unfortunately, we can't simply create you a new account automatically because there are passwords that have to be chosen and such. http://www.vyatta.org RELEASE NOTES AND DOCUMENTATION: ================================ You can find new release notes and updated documentation for this release on the Vyatta.org documentation page: http://www.vyatta.org/documentation NOTABLE NEW FEATURES AND CHANGES: ================================= I'll assume that you have read the older Glendale Alpha 1 announcement and won't repeat everything changed from VC3 here. If you have not read it, you can find it here: http://mailman.vyatta.com/pipermail/vyatta-users/2008-January/002966.html Also note that you can find more detail in the VC4 (Glendale) Alpha 2 release notes. Notable changes include: * You spoke and we listened. In FusionCLI, Alpha 1, "?" did not invoke the online help subsystem. This has been changed in Alpha 2 and "?" works as you would expect. To enter a literal question mark into the input buffer, you'll need to prefix it with <Ctrl>+v. * We fixed a whole lot of bugs in the routing subsystem. * The role-based access control that was present in Alpha 1 has been refined and debugged. We also changed the role name of the lowest permission user from "user" to "operator". The "root" and "admin" roles are unchanged. * Alpha 2 now supports equal-cost multi-path routing. * The remote access VPN functionality was present in Alpha 1, but has now been documented more fully. * The GRE and IP-in-IP tunnel functionality was present in Alpha 1, but has now been documented more fully. * Alpha 2 supports PPPoE. * Alpha 2 supports WAN load balancing. * Alpha 2 supports QoS. * Alpha 2 supports the ability to easily clear interface statistics for easier network troubleshooting. INSTALLATION AND UPGRADING FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES: ================================================== As with Alpha 1, Alpha 2 is distributed in ISO format only, not as a package upgrade. You'll have to reinstall. Further, as with Alpha 1, the configuration file is not compatible either with VC3 or with Alpha 1. You'll have to save off an older configuration file and then manually it to the new syntax. The changes from Alpha 1 are minor. TOP ENHANCEMENT REQUESTS: ========================= It should be noted that with the VC4, many of the Top Enhancement Requests on the Vyatta Community wiki will have been addressed. I'd give you a full link to the wiki, but the move to Vyatta.org just obsoleted it, so trust me. On the Top 5 Enhancement Request list: #1: DHCP client: Implemented in Alpha 1 #2: QoS: Implemented in Alpha 2 #3: VPN will be significantly improved with the addition of VPN client: Implemented in Alpha 1 #5: PPPoE: Implemented in Alpha 2 On the General Enhancement Requests list: #2: Bandwidth policing: Depending on how you read this one, the QoS feature set may give you what you want. Inbound policing won't be implmented, but you will be able to set bandwidth caps on particular traffic types on the outbound to prevent bulk traffic from swamping higher priority traffic on a skinny WAN interface, for instance. #17: 4-byte ASN: Implemented in Alpha 1 #34: GRE tunnels: Implemented in Alpha 1 We do review the Top Enhancement requests list and take it seriously. See the new enhancement request page on Vyatta.org, under the Contribute top-menu. FUTURE VC4 RELEASES: ==================== VC4 represents significant changes and a lot of work on the part of the development team. In order to facilitate additional testing and feedback from the Vyatta Community, we'll be making other preview releases available according to the following (rough) schedule: * Alpha 1 - January 2008 * Alpha 2 - February 2008 * Beta - March 2008 * VC4 Release - April 2008 All of these releases will be announced in the Vyatta.org forums. WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU: ====================== In order to make VC4 the best Vyatta Community release ever, we need testing, testing, testing. The system is now quite stable and is in regular use here at Vyatta on our own internal network. We'd like to get as much road-testing as possible while there is still active development going on. Please download and test VC4 in your own network and report back in the Vyatta.org forums as to what you are finding. If you think you have an actual bug, please file it in the Vyatta Bugzilla database: http://bugzilla.vyatta.com/ Cheers, -- Dave Roberts Vyatta Cruise Director _______________________________________________ Vyatta-users mailing list Vyatta-users@mailman.vyatta.com http://mailman.vyatta.com/mailman/listinfo/vyatta-users
