ipmitool is useful for reading sensors (fan speed, voltage, temperature, LED indicator status), system event logs, etc. It's also useful for configuration of the IPMI device itself, i.e. network and authentication.

I am not aware of any issues when the related modules are loaded on machines without IPMI interfaces. Any IPMI supporting the standard interface should work, and AFAIK ipmitool itself features pluggable protocol modules.

Another benefit would be possible integration for some SNMP MIBs for reporting device health, in addition to command line options - just like the discussion a few weeks ago on IRC re: lm_sensors support.

Generally, the more OOB mechanisms we support the better. However, I've
never used ipmitools myself, so before we merge this into the image, I'd
like to know if:

* Having it installed cannot create any problems for machines without IPMI
* The modules and tools work with all supported IPMI devices equally well
* Whether any command-line integration would help.

Personally I only used the web interface of the IPMI controller, so if
you briefly describe what those utils can do it would be nice.

Thoughts on having vyos ship with the the ipmitool debian packages and having
these two kernel
modules loaded by default? ipmi_devintf and ipmi_si
I have ipmi interfaces on all of the devices that I'm running vyos on
and while I can add these after the fact I think that it would be useful
to ship with ipmitool and loading the kernel modules.
