I grew up fishing Putah Creek as a boy in northern CA. I lived about a 1/2
hour away and my buddies and I would fish and camp at our favorite spot as
often as we could get away. Learned a lot about life there, first ever
drinking game...can still recite every line, "a big brown bear, a couple of
ducks, three black geese...", learned a little about fishing.

Those days were way before I knew anything about flyfishing. Although I did
flyfish the creek in the winter (December) with my wife about four years ago
when home visiting the family for Christmas. BJ caught a monster rainbow on
a size 18 or so "egg-sucking leech" pattern that a local UC Davis prof was
nice enough to share with us. I was laughing so hard when I took her picture
that I didn't even get the fish in it. All I had in the frame was my wife.
The look on her face is priceless.

I am not real sure where the name originated, but the area has a lot of
history with not only Spanish but Native California Indians as well. The
name is pronounced with a long U, unlike the "puta" that Mike refers to. I
have so many fond memories from that home river of mine, I could reminisce
for days.

Never expected to see Putah Creek brought up on this list. Small world.
