This is suspiciously looking like a very down year for wild fish return.
There are few rivers anywhere in the state that are getting good reports.
My hope is that the recent rain will bring in a spurt before the closure.
IMHO, the fly fisherman does not have access to returning native fish until
this time of year (ie) Mar. 15-May whatever. Pre-spawn fish lay up in deep
slow water, usually in proximity to where they will spawn. They are
ripening and do not want to fight faster flow. In years gone by, we caught
many a native by "boondogging" through deep, slow water. The boater and
bait guy also often misses this approach by focusing on traditional flows.
Of course, not all natives spawn at the same time, so some are in shallower
flow prior to spawning. On the Sky, many of the spawning fish are above the
"no can fish zone"...above Sultan. If it works out for me, I like to fish
above the Sultan the last week of February. We do know though, that there
are numbers of fish below Sultan if the return is decent. (IMHO) = in my
humble opinion!
