Well I finally managed a trip over to Rocky Ford after having been unable to
get away all winter. I only had two hours to fish early in the morning but
figured a fish or two would make my day. Unfortunately, I picked the morning
when the fish all had lock jaw. I tossed all my old stand by's at them:
scuds, leaches, chironimids, various dry etc. and only got two looks and 1
slow hook set on my part. The fish were all feeding on small midges (they
wouldn't look at a size 20 Griffith Gnat) or were digging out nymphs from the
bottom. My scud never fails me but it did today. The water was down about a
foot from what I consider normal so there was very little current off the
island and most of the rest of the creek was like a lake except by the fish
hatcheries.
As I was leaving, I did observe one gentleman hook and fight a 24 incher for
several minutes until his buddy suggested getting the camera. 30 seconds
later the hook pulled out and the fish was gone.
